Eating toenails reminds me of Wes Anderson

That weird nerdy kid who had karate lessons and ate his toe nails between katas. A Wes Anderson film is synonymous with that vibe in my book. I make reference to this stuff because back in the day, I had a good friend who used to do exactly this at Karate lessons.

My friend was a pretty cool kid, and about the only kid outside my ‘regular’ group of friends that I could seriously talk to about comics and other ‘strange’ things. I assume it’s that comfort with the strange that I absorb from Wes Anderson’s work. Plus that has to be the reason why my eyes light up when I catch a whiff of that toenail scent his new movies emit (or maybe that’s just me).

The Fantastic Mr. Fox, is based on a kids book, it’s weird, it looks weird, the characters are weird, and I loved every toenail biting second of it. The movie is not for everyone, but it’s worth at least fighting past the stop motion style, to get to know the characters. I mention fighting past the stop motion because while I adore it, I can understand how off putting it can be.

George Clooney, Eric Anderson and Jason Schwartzman are main characters, and did a great job grounding the absurdity. The relationship between these three foxes has pretty humorous repercussions, and featured some nice character ticks. I could keep going and actually do some real writing, but alas I am not a writer. Plus I would only venture into Spoiler land, without doing Anderson’s work much justice.

So maybe you’ll start watching Anderson’s work after this, and you never know maybe you’ll be eating your toenails in no time. I guess then we’ll be eligible to become friends and talk about comics and such. So thanks go out to Mr. Anderson, even though my toe chomping buddy and I lost touch over the years, he still lives on.
